Spirit of Inclusion Photoshoot

Just before the holidays, we conducted our first ever "Sprit of Inclusion" Photoshoot where we provided sensory-informed photography to families with autistic and developmentally disabled members so they too can share their holiday greetings with friends and family.

Though it was such a good time with some wonderful outcomes, one thing that has become abundantly clear to me is just how accustomed we all are to spending as little time as possible when having our photos taken. Perhaps it's from years and years of sitting on a stool for the whole of 2 minutes to get a couple snaps for the years school photo/yearbook. Perhaps it's from past encounters with old-school photographers making it obnoxiously clear to you just how valuable their time is over your own. Or maybe it's just the anxiety-inducing desire for just "one good shot." Whatever the case, It's important to consider time when getting your portraits taken and consider it in the sense that it is your time, therefore you should take your time. In my experience, great portrait photography is indeed about light manipulation, choice of lens and setting, naturally. But just as important is the "vibe" of the encounter with subjects, especially neurodivergent subjects.

Sometimes they are upbeat and excited to say cheese, making for swift and stellar results. Other times, they may be in the middle of a behavior or may have a tough time adjusting to the environment straight away. This is where patience is paramount. Simply backing off to allow for acclamation to the environment with the aid of, perhaps, a sensory toy, weighted blanket, headphones or any other comfort item can help instill calm, confidence and, ultimately, trust into your loved one. Trust that they are safe and in a nurturing environment with no restraints to a reasonable degree. Sure it can take a long while but this is your time and a sensory-informed photographer knows and respects this full-well. Once you take the time necessary for them to get comfortable, getting a great smile is easy work. Bringing their favorite toys, music and videos do best in getting organically happy smiles for epic memories that last forever. Much like what's captured in the images above.

We look forward to continuing our service to this community and sharing these wonderful outcomes we take so much pride in.
