Why joining AAG Peer Mentoring Group is right for you

Caring for autistic and developmentally disabled individuals is as unique a challenge as it gets. Take the stresses of caring for a neurotypical individual and throw in a number of elements like sensory considerations in their environment, strict and unmoving food preferences, behaviors and others to get a sense of what parents and caretakers of autistic and developmentally disabled individuals have to manage on a daily basis. For many, this sort of care requires much larger share of ones time, attention and money leaving many parents and caretakers siloed off from their social circles and even society at large. We've met many parents and caretakers who have to work second and third jobs just to be able to provide specific, costly food items or their loved one simply wont eat otherwise. In contrast, work multiple jobs just to keep food in the pantry because their loved one has a condition that makes them largely insatiable. Parents and caretakers who have to manage behaviors from loved ones twice their size; individuals who can barely get basic, personal necessities done because they can't leave their loved one unattended long enough to allow for this.

It's for this and more that we started the AAG Peer Mentoring Group. A group session where parents and caretakers from all over can come together as a community of support for one another. In fact, the founding board member of our organization is, herself, a parent of an autistic individual and called for the creation of our peer mentoring group in light of the real challenges she had faced so others can find supports she didn't have available to her as a single mother. Today, our Peer Mentoring Group has emerged as powerful platform for education, empathy, connection and tangible support. Among our offerings, Peer Mentoring sessions stand out as an invaluable resource for neurodivergent individuals and their families. Let's explore why attending our sessions is worthwhile:

Personalized Support and Guidance

Peer mentoring sessions within Autism Ally Group offer a unique opportunity for parents and caretakers to receive personalized support and guidance through interactions with others who share similar experiences. This fosters a sense of understanding and camaraderie, creating a safe space for open and honest discussions about challenges and triumphs. It also offers an opportunity to receive guidance and insights on private and government subsidized resources available to them that they may be unaware of which is all too common within this sphere.

A Rewarding Escape

Our Peer Mentoring sessions are an often fun experience with laughs, games and even prize giveaways of useful items including communications tablets giving a voice to non-verbal, autistic individuals. For many, it's also an escape where parents and caretakers can partake in venting sessions that others within their personal circles may have no genuine interest in for its persistence. We understand that simply venting your struggles can be a major help in managing it. Airing your grievances in an understanding and nurturing environment often proves therapeutic and can even help develop personalized coping mechanisms.

Building Empathy and Understanding

Engaging in dialogue, sharing stories, and asking questions in a supportive environment helps parents and caretakers develop a deeper empathy and understanding for the unique perspectives and challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals. This is critical in ensuring positive outcomes for both individual and caretaker alike and just as critical in reducing cases of neglect, abuse or abandonment. Attending peer mentoring sessions not only benefits those directly involved but also contributes to the broader goal of advocacy and awareness. Armed with a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by parents, caretaker and their loved ones, participants can become advocates for change in their communities. This ripple effect helps create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

These are just a few examples of why it's worth joining our growing community within our Peer Mentoring Group. Find out the rest for yourself by joining sessions every third Thursday of every month from 6:30pm - 9:30pm EST here.
